Learn How to Draw Water in 6 Different Ways
Water is an indispensable element in our lives. However, when it comes to art, capturing water can pose a considerable challenge. Unlike flowers or animals, water is transparent and lacks color. In fact, we often perceive water in relation to other objects, such as a clear drinking glass. So, how can we accurately depict this elusive compound?
In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to draw water in six different ways: a water drop, water in a glass, tears, running water, an ocean, and a puddle. All you’ll need are basic drawing tools like a pencil, eraser, pen, and paper. Are you ready to dive in? Let’s get started and master the art of drawing water!
How to Draw a Water Drop
Step 1: Sketch a Gentle Wave
To create half of the water drop, begin by drawing a soft, undulating wave.
Step 2: Complete the Water Drop
Next, complete the water drop by drawing the other half, mirroring the shape created in the previous step.
Step 3: Add Shading
Fill in the water drop using a combination of hatch marks and crosshatching. Focus on shading the bottom part of the drop to enhance its three-dimensional appearance.
Step 4: Ink the Drawing
Lastly, trace over the pencil lines with ink. Once the ink has dried, erase any remaining pencil marks, and voila! You have successfully drawn a realistic water drop.
How to Draw Water in a Glass
Step 1: Sketch a Glass
Start by sketching a simple drinking glass. You may find it helpful to refer to a reference photo.
Step 2: Add an Oval
Within the glass, add a narrow oval. The position of the oval will determine the water level in the glass. In the example above, it is about halfway full.
Step 3: Create Texture
To give depth to your drawing, add texture to both the glass and the water. Use hatch marks and crosshatching following the curve of the glass.
Step 4: Ink the Drawing
Finish the drawing by outlining it with ink. Carefully trace over the pencil lines using a pen of your choice. Congratulations! You have now successfully drawn a glass of water.
How to Draw Tears
Step 1: Draw an Eye
Begin by sketching a human eye. You have the freedom to make it realistic or stylized, depending on your preference.
Step 2: Sketch a Small Oval
Within the eye, add a small oval close to the waterline (the bottom of the eye).
Step 3: Depict a Tear
Draw a water drop slightly below the eye to create the tear. You can follow the instructions from the previous tutorial to complete this step.
Step 4: Ink the Drawing
Ink the drawing, and add any necessary texture. Great job! You have successfully captured tears on paper.
How to Draw Running Water
Step 1: Draw a Faucet
In this demonstration, we will depict running water coming out of a sink faucet. Begin by drawing a curved tube shape and cap it off with a square head.
Step 2: Add Two Lines
To create the stream of water, add two straight lines to the cap of the faucet.
Step 3: Add Texture
Bring the faucet and water to life by filling them with texture. Use a combination of hatch marks and crosshatching. The lines within the water will contribute to the illusion of movement.
Step 4: Ink the Drawing
Finally, trace over the pencil lines with ink. Use a suitable pen to carefully define the details. Once the ink has dried, erase any remaining pencil marks. Well done! You have successfully drawn running water.
How to Draw an Ocean
Step 1: Draw a Wavy Line
Start the illustration by drawing a wavy, horizontal line to represent the horizon.
Step 2: Add Wavy Lines
Starting just below the horizon, create texture by adding wavy and looped lines. These lines will give your drawing a sense of movement.
Step 3: Enhance Texture
Continue adding texture until you fill the entire body of water. The more detail you add, the more realistic your ocean will appear.
Step 4: Ink the Drawing
Ink the drawing, carefully tracing over the pencil lines. Once the ink has dried, erase any remaining pencil marks. Congratulations! You have successfully illustrated the ocean.
How to Draw a Puddle
Step 1: Draw a Narrow Oval
Begin by sketching a long and narrow oval to form the outline of the puddle.
Step 2: Draw Another Oval
Draw another oval intersecting with the first one.
Step 3: Merge the Ovals
Merge the two ovals by erasing the pencil marks inside the combined shape. This will create the outline of the puddle.
Step 4: Add Texture
To give the puddle depth, add texture within the shape. Use wavy lines following the curvature of the puddle. Feel free to add texture to the surrounding environment, such as stippling to depict dirt.
Step 5: Ink the Drawing
Finally, go over the drawing with ink using a pen of your choice. Congratulations! You have successfully drawn a puddle.
