How to Draw a Nose

Have you ever struggled with drawing noses? Fear not! In this tutorial, we will teach you how to draw a nose with just a few simple pencil strokes. By following our step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to create a realistic-looking nose effortlessly.

Step by Step Drawing Tutorial: How to Draw a Nose

Nose Guidelines (Step 1-7)

To get started, lightly sketch these basic shapes and lines using a pencil:

  1. (Optional) Draw a straight vertical line. This will serve as a reference if you’re drawing the nose within a face.
  2. (Optional) Add another vertical line parallel to the first one.
  3. (Optional) Draw a third line at the same distance and parallel to the second line.
  4. (Optional) Create a horizontal line at the bottom of the three lines.
  5. At the bottom of the guide grid, in the middle (if you used step 1), draw a circle for the ball of the nose.
  6. Add another smaller circle overlapping to the left of the first circle. These will be the edges of the nostrils.
  7. Mirror the previous step, adding a small circle to the right side.

Let’s Start Drawing

Now, you can switch to a pen or colored pencil to complete the nose drawing:

  1. Trace the middle guide at the bottom and draw a curved line right in between the space where the small circles meet the bigger one.
  2. Add the left nostril – along the bottom of the left guide circle, draw a rounded triangle shape that connects to the curved line from step 8.
  3. Mirror the nostril created in step 9 and draw a second nostril on the right side.
  4. Draw the nose wings – along the left circle guide and the left vertical line, draw a curved line.
  5. Mirror the wing created in step 11 and draw a second curved line for the right nose wing.
  6. At the top of the circle above the nose (at the length of the bigger circle’s diameter and right above where the small and bigger circle guides meet), draw a curved line to indicate the back of the nose.
  7. Mirror the line added in step 13, drawing a second curved line for the bridge of the nose.
  8. Erase the guidelines.

Now, you have successfully drawn a realistic nose! Feel free to add color and shading to your artwork. Here’s a little coloring tip for you: add shade around the wings, one side of the back, and the bottom of the nose. Highlight the tip of the nose, along the back, and in the middle of the wings.

Although this tutorial depicts a front-facing nose, remember to consider the direction of the light source when adding highlights and shades. The shadows will help give the nose its shape.

Please note that this is just a basic example and can be an excellent starting point for kids learning how to draw. As you continue to practice, you will be able to personalize your drawings. Feel free to alter the dimensions, make the nose bigger or smaller, round or pointy, or even add a hump by inverting the curved lines at the back of the nose. Get creative and add or omit any details you like!
