How to Draw a Gorilla – Step by Step Guide

Gorillas, the ground-dwelling great apes found in central and east Africa’s tropical forests, are known for their distinctive physical features. These include broad chests, wide shoulders, hairless faces, and human-like hands. While gorillas primarily stick to a vegetarian diet, they may occasionally develop a taste for termites and ants. Due to their muscular build and fiery facial features, people of all ages are fascinated by drawing gorillas.

To cater to the demand of our readers, we have created a concise step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a gorilla. This tutorial consists of 9 easy-to-follow steps, accompanied by visual illustrations. The best part about this guide is that it allows creative individuals like yourself to further refine your artistic skills.

With this comprehensive guide, all you need is a piece of paper and a pencil to get started. Feel free to customize your drawing and choose the colors that resonate with you. So, let’s dive in and unleash your inner creativity!

How to Draw a Gorilla – Let’s Get Started!

Step 1 – Sketch the Head’s Structure

Begin by sketching a sideways oval shape on the upper portion of your paper. This shape will serve as the structure for the top part of the gorilla’s head. To ensure that the gorilla is centered on your paper, create reference lines by drawing a horizontal and vertical line that intersect. Place the vertical line above the horizontal line, exactly where you should draw the oval shape.

Step 2 – Form the Gorilla’s Head with Basic Shapes

Draw another sideways oval shape right underneath and slightly overlapping the previous one. This new shape should be relatively larger than the first, as shown in the illustration. When outlining the rough sketch of the gorilla’s head, use light strokes to avoid pressing down too hard with your pencil. This will make it easier to remove unnecessary lines later on.

Step 3 – Refine the Gorilla’s Head

Polish up the outline of the gorilla’s head by using the conjoined oval shapes as a guide. Erase any overlapping lines within the two shapes to reveal the finalized outline. This step will define the inner outline of the gorilla’s head.

Step 4 – Create the Outer Outline of the Head

Draw another outline outside the previous one, following the original form to define the outer figure of the gorilla’s head. Once completed, you should now have a parallel outline as depicted in the illustration.

Step 5 – Draw the Gorilla’s Arms

After completing the structure of the gorilla’s head, move on to its body. Draw curved lines right underneath the head to form a pair of arms. As gorillas naturally have a brawny build, make sure to depict beefy arms. Don’t forget to draw a rounded shape at the bottom of each arm to represent the gorilla’s hands.

Step 6 – Add Patterns to the Gorilla’s Arms

Enhance your drawing by adding connected curved lines above each wrist to create a furry texture on the gorilla’s arms. This will contribute to a more realistic appearance.

Step 7 – Draw the Lower Body of the Gorilla

Now that the upper body is complete, let’s focus on the gorilla’s lower body. Draw a slightly downward curved horizontal line between its arms to outline the chest. Then, draw another line below to define the gorilla’s belly. To depict the visible portion of the gorilla’s legs, draw two curved vertical lines leaning in opposite directions.

Step 8 – Add Ears to the Gorilla’s Head

Draw rounded shapes on each side of the gorilla’s head to form its ears. The ears should be positioned beside the concave on both sides of the head.

Step 9 – Finalize the Facial Features

Give your gorilla a happy expression by drawing two oval shapes for the eyes, with a curved line above each eye to form the eyebrows. Then, draw two small circles in the middle of the gorilla’s face to create the nose. Lastly, draw a long upward curved line to depict a wide smile on the gorilla’s face. And there you have it—an extremely happy and adorable gorilla!

As you can see, the gorilla drawing is now complete. All that’s left is to add a dash of color to make the gorilla appear vibrant and lively! This is where you can showcase your artistic skills by selecting and mixing various colors.

In general, gorillas have black skin, and the color of their fur coat ranges from black and grey to red and brown. You can opt to follow the standard color scheme or use a unique set of colors. Either way, we’re confident that your drawing will turn out beautifully!

So, have fun experimenting with colors and witness your gorilla drawing come to life!
