Personalizing Your Caterpillar Drawing
If you’d like to create multiple cute caterpillars, simply duplicate the first drawing and arrange them in any way you like. For a vibrant drawing, consider using a rainbow-inspired color scheme for the body and feet.
To add a personal touch, you can include a name just below the caterpillar. There are three different methods for adding text to your drawing. Sign up for the So Simple SVG Quotes course if you’d like a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this in Inkscape.
Materials Needed to Draw a Caterpillar
Before we begin, gather your drawing supplies. If you prefer digital drawing, you’ll need an iPad, Apple pencil, and Procreate. For traditional paper drawing, you’ll need a drawing pencil, drawing paper, and art markers or colored pencils. A light table for tracing is optional but can be useful.
I recommend using graphic software programs like Inkscape, Affinity Designer, or Procreate for easy cartoon drawings. Inkscape is a free, open-source graphic software that I find particularly useful. If you’re away from your computer, you can even use an online Inkscape drawing app.
The brushes I prefer to use in Procreate include the Procreate brush, round brush, and marker brush. However, feel free to use any brushes that you’re comfortable with.
Step-by-Step Guide to Drawing a Caterpillar
Let’s begin by creating the head of the caterpillar. To ensure a perfect circle, draw a circle and hold the pencil tip down for a few seconds. The circle will automatically adjust to a perfect shape.
Next, draw a semi-circle starting from the top right side of the head and ending at the bottom right side. Repeat this step six more times to complete the body. Vary the size and shape of the semi-circles to give the body an organic appearance. Make sure to make the last semi-circle slightly smaller than the others.
Now, let’s add feet to our caterpillar. Draw a small pair of v shapes under each semi-circle. Although I considered creating boot-style feet, I decided that the v shape gives the caterpillar a more realistic yet cartoonish look.
To create the face, use a few simple strokes. Draw circles for the eyes and add a curved line in each circle. Then, draw another curved line below to form a smile. Finally, draw two lines from the top of the head and end each line with an open circle to create antennae.
With the outline of the caterpillar complete, you can now move on to coloring it.
Coloring Your Caterpillar Drawing
To add color to your caterpillar drawing, use the fill bucket tool to fill the bounded areas. Ensure that there are no gaps in the shapes you want to fill. If you encounter gaps, refer back to the tip above for creating perfect closed shapes.
For ease of coloring, create a separate layer under the outline. Choose your preferred brush, such as the round brush or marker brush, and color each section. Congratulations! Your easy caterpillar drawing is now complete.
