Two elephants, Boonme and Buabaan, have been liberated after enduring up to 80 years of captivity, marked by grueling labor in Thailand’s logging industry and elephant trekking trade.

Their newfound freedom is now realized at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, where they are surrounded by the serenity of a river and mud bath.
The elephants’ release was made possible through a substantial fundraising effort, spearheaded by Canadian YouTube vlogger and filmmaker Christian Leblanc. The funds secured their liberation from a life of confinement and fatigue.

Boonme, aged 80, and Buabaan, aged 50, now spend their days in blissful activities, enjoying the comforts of a river, playing, and feasting on fresh fruits and vegetables. This starkly contrasts with the harsh conditions they endured for decades, subjected to the logging industry’s demands and forced labor in the elephant trekking trade.
Leblanc expressed his joy witnessing the elephants’ newfound happiness, highlighting their inseparable bond with a new friend named BaiCha. The trio now revels in a peaceful existence far removed from the burdens of their past.

Before their release, Boonme and Buabaan were forced to carry countless tourists daily, often collapsing from exhaustion while bound by chains. The rescue operation involved a 15-hour truck journey to Surin and a 23-hour return trip, with the elephants transported in specially designed trucks to ensure their safety.
Leblanc’s upcoming documentary, “Black Tusk,” aims to shed light on the inherent cruelty within Thailand’s elephant trekking industry and advocate for responsible elephant tourism.

The successful rescue and relocation of Boonme and Buabaan mark a significant step toward raising awareness about the plight of captive elephants and promoting ethical practices in their treatment.
The journey from captivity to freedom was made possible through the collaboration of compassionate individuals and the support of a global community, reflecting a shared commitment to ending the exploitation of elephants and offering them a chance for a life filled with dignity and joy.
