The Lone Star College-Tomball police department is not just an entity devoted to ensuring the security of the school grounds; it embodies a community of compassionate individuals who go beyond their call of duty. In August 2022, Officer Thomas Tyree, usually engaged in keeping the grounds safe, found himself immersed in a situation of unexpected compassion.

On that particular day, Tyree decided to patrol on foot—an opportune moment to enjoy the weather, get some steps in, and serve the community in a more personal way. Little did he know that he was about to encounter a tiny soul in desperate need.

As Tyree walked the grounds of the west side of campus, he heard whimpering near the veterinary technology building. Investigating the source of the distress, he discovered a tiny, frail canine struggling with injuries and malnutrition. The cries were a plea for help, a language Tyree understood without a translator.

Instinctively, Tyree’s first response was to provide immediate care to the pup. He gently picked him up, ensuring not to cause more harm, and carried him to the safety of his patrol vehicle. The dog, later named Fergusson, was in a dire state, requiring urgent attention.

Tyree’s next move was crucial. He rushed Fergusson to the veterinary technology facility on campus, where Dr. Angela MacFarlane, a seasoned veterinarian, took charge. The severity of Fergusson’s injuries indicated a life of hardship and struggle. Tyree’s prompt intervention had, however, offered a glimmer of hope.

The veterinary team faced a delicate decision. Fergusson’s injuries were extensive, and the road to recovery seemed uncertain. Nevertheless, they opted to attempt to help him, illustrating the humane values that form the foundation of such professional communities. The decision reflected the commitment not just to perform their duty but to go above and beyond in the face of suffering.

Fergusson’s recovery journey began, and the support from the college community poured in. Jeff Grubert, a student in veterinary technology who witnessed the event, remarked on Fergusson’s resilience.

“Legless runs and playful hops – he is a happy puppy, well-behaved, and very active. Thanks to the amazing LSC-Tomball community that rallied to help him, Legless has been given a second chance,” Grubert said.

Tyree, recognized as the 2022 Police Officer of the Year for the LSC-Tomball Police Department, demonstrated exceptional dedication to service beyond the conventional expectations of law enforcement. His actions exemplified the essence of a hero—one who extends a helping hand to the voiceless and vulnerable.
