FIA steward claims Lando Norris needs Max Verstappen to have ‘dreadful run of bad luck’ to win 2024 title

Max Verstappen‘s dominant victory at the Brazilian GP has likely dashed Lando Norris’s hopes of clinching his first F1 title. Verstappen’s relentless performance widened the gap, making it harder for the Briton to recover and challenge for the championship. Despite a strong season, the growing points deficit has put Norris’s title hopes on the edge.

However, F1 steward Johnny Herbert believes that if Verstappen faces bad luck, it could open a path for the 24-year-old to claim the title. Lando Norris had a disappointing afternoon at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Despite starting from pole position, he couldn’t maintain his lead and lost his position to George Russell.

To make matters worse, his challenger Max Verstappen had an incredible performance, climbing from P17 to win the race. Things didn’t improve for Norris during the race restarts, which were necessary due to heavy rain. He made a couple of mistakes, ultimately finishing in sixth place and Verstappen secured the victory.

Johnny Herbert believes that now at this point it will be very difficult for the McLaren driver to catch up. Lando has had to play catch up and that is very difficult to do. He has been chipping away at Max’s lead but the points lead now means the title is out of reach unless Max has a dreadful run of bad luck which won’t happen.

Johnny Herbert said (via GPblog. com)Herbert advised the Briton to pay attention to the positive sides this year. Norris has performed extremely well, securing many pole positions in the 2024 season.

Although he couldn’t convert some good starts into victories, Norris should learn and return stronger in 2025. Lando has to take the positives of what has happened this year. He has driven so well, got poles and improved massively.

He has a great chance of starting next year very strongly and if he can capitalize on that as Max did this year, then who knows what could happen. He will keep on learning. We haven’t seen the best of Lando yet nor for that matter Max.

Instead, they lost seven points in Hungary by letting Oscar Piastri win. Johnny HerbertThe Briton and McLaren were always on the back foot, so missing out on the championship wasn’t due to a single mistake.

Johnny Herbert pointed out that while they could’ve earned more points, racing is full of ups and downs. McLaren and Lando missed out on seven points in Hungary because they let Piastri win and it’s those things they need to be conscious of going into next season. Will they lose the championship this year, no because they were always on catch-up.

They could have got more points, but that is racing. Lando will go into 2025 knowing he can beat Max. Johnny Herbert explainedRELATEDAudi reveals shocking cost of poaching Gabriel Bortoleto from McLarenThere are just three races left this season.

The 2024 campaign has been full of ups and downs and there should be more of the same in the next race in Las Vegas.
