On Sunday, MLB insider Hector Gomez indicated that the New York Mets had, following their meeting with star free agent Juan Soto, offered the 25-year-old a contract worth $660 million. Just one day later, however, conflicting reports from another insider have emerged. ”Upon the release of the initial report, skeptics believed not only that the reported figure of $660 million was higher than Soto was expected to fetch, but came much earlier than any major free agent offer in recent memory. With respect to the three prior MLB offseasons, the biggest free agent targets signed as follows: Shohei Ohtani – Dec. 9, Aaron Judge – Dec.

20, and in the winter following the 2021 season Freddie Freeman, Kris Bryant and Carlos Correa all did not sign until March of 2022, thanks in part to the MLB lockout. The report garnered skepticism right away, but Murray adamantly denied the report altogether, saying “I can’t see a team coming out right away and offering $660 million. That would almost be too good to be true.

”Only time will tell if the Mets will indeed make an offer like the one that was initially reported, but it’s safe to assume there will be a plethora of reports about offers to Soto before he finally pens a contract.
