Blake Lively shares the story of the Australian star who gave her first autograph and explains why she still displays it on her wall

Blake Lively has revealed Australian director Baz Luhrmann signed her first autograph, which she still keeps on her wall. The Elvis director, 62, was being honoured at the 2024 LACMA Art and Film Gala in Los Angeles over the weekend, which actress Blake, 37, also attended. Blake took to Instagram to share photos of herself at the event in a stunning mini dress by Tamara Ralph and paid tribute to Baz in a long caption.

‘Baz Luhrmann was the first and only signed poster I was ever lucky enough to have on my wall when I was a teenager,’ she revealed. ‘It’s still on my wall today. To know him will always be surreal.

’The star, who worked with the Australian auteur on a recent Vogue shoot, went on to say Baz is ‘mischievous and magical. ’‘He’ll grab your hand and run away from the gala with you to do an impromptu photoshoot because he’s inspired by everything, your cape and a palm tree is all he needs to see thrill. ’‘He’ll enthusiastically play along when you ask to put your cape on him so you can take pictures of him in a pose that he has subliminally trademarked in every girl who grew up in the 90s.

That applies to strangers, friends, colleagues.

You can see it in his work, because it’s WHO HE IS,’ the Hollywood star explained. Blake’s tribute to Baz comes after her promotional tour for It Ends With Us, which was shrouded with negative press – among the drama was her frosty relationship with her co-star and the film’s director Justin Baldoni. In addition, Blake promoted the film as something to ‘grab your friends and wear your florals,’ which came across as insensitive and tone deaf to some due to the domestic violence themes present in the movie.

Journalist Kjersti Flaa also posted an interview she did in 2016 to her YouTube page. ‘Baz Luhrmann was the first and only signed poster I was ever lucky enough to have on my wall when I was a teenager,’ she revealed. She never apologised to the journalist. Another instance was an interview Blake did on a local Chicago news broadcast, when the host asked her what she should tell a fan who approached her to discuss the main theme of the movie which was domestic violence. Blake sarcastically answered, asking the host if she should give them her address.
