Cooper, the American Foxhound, defied the odds despite his rare condition. Born without a neck, with compressed and fused vertebrae, his future looked uncertain. Rescued at just two months old near a pet mill in Halifax, Virginia, Cooper was taken in by Secondhand Hounds based in Minnetonka.

Initially struggling to walk for extended periods and experiencing difficulties with his bodily functions due to his unique condition, Cooper required special care. Treated for ear mites, worms, and a hernia, he even needed surgery to aid in his bowel movements.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including a failed initial placement where he couldn’t resist chasing the household cats, Cooper eventually found his perfect match with Elly and Andy Keegan. His new family, along with their dogs Skylar, Tiva, and Waylon, provided him with the ideal environment to thrive.

Although Cooper suffered a setback in the form of a neck fracture, he persevered with the support of Secondhand Hounds. With regular antibiotic treatment, he regained bladder control and embraced his newfound freedom, albeit restricted to soft surfaces due to his condition.

Cooper’s story sheds light on the resilience and love that dogs with disabilities have to offer, proving to be exceptional companions. Recognized as a “short-on-spine, big-on-love” pup, Cooper’s joyful spirit and protective nature endeared him to his forever family and countless others who followed his journey.
