PlanetF1. com’s driver ratings are a key element of our post-race coverage, and whether you agree or not with our scores (mostly not, judging by the comments sections…) we are keeping track of each driver’s average rating in F1 2024. As a result, this is forming our ‘power rankings’ for the season as a whole, so a good race for any driver can push them up and a bad race can push them down.
Come season’s end, we’ll have a full table for you to look through – and it aims to reflect driver performance in their cars rather than the outright World Championship order. F1 2024 power rankings by driverFirst, a bit of housekeeping. Any regular reader of our post-race ratings will know that each driver is given a number between 1 and 10 for their performance across the whole race weekend, the majority of which will be for their performance in the Grand Prix but, in other circumstances, their qualifying and Sprint performances can also be taken into account.
We’ll just be looking at full-time drivers to avoid skewing the ratings, so with apologies to Oliver Bearman after his sterling 9 in Saudi Arabia and 8. 5 in Baku, he’ll not be counted towards the overall average unless he stays in the Haas seat full-time – he would have appeared at the very top of the rankings, though, so he can take that nonetheless! We will be updating these rankings as the year progresses, with our scores reflective of the averages in our driver ratings all season.
Ready? Let’s take a look. [Average scores correct as of 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix]1: Lando Norris: 8.
4[Last race: 9]Having threatened Max Verstappen for a long time in our power rankings, Norris has finally overhauled him to go top for the season so far. He’d much rather be top of the Drivers’ standings, of course, but this is one win at least. 2 (+1): Charles Leclerc: 8.
35[Last race: 9]United States Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc moves up a spot for the second race running last time out, with his perfect 10 in Austin nudging him past Oscar Piastri. 3 (-2): Max Verstappen: 8. 25[Last race: 4]Verstappen scored his worst driver rating of the season in Mexico after his two 10-second penalties, and he has been toppled from the top of our power rankings having been at the summit all year.
4: Oscar Piastri: 8. 18[Last race: 7]After a fine run over recent races, Piastri suffered his lowest score since Zandvoort at the United States Grand Prix, with a repeat of that in Mexico City. 5 (+1): Carlos Sainz: 7.
82[Last race: 10]Sainz leapfrogged both Mercedes drivers after a productive weekend for Ferrari in Austin, and a perfect 10 in Mexico puts him into the top five for the season. 6 [-1]: Franco Colapinto: 7. 81[Last race: 6.
5]Yes, Colapinto has only done five races, but they have been excellent performances so far. His power ranking is obviously skewed compared to the rest of the field given their averages are taken over the full season to date, so his rating is likely to fluctuate more than most for the remainder of the year. Unless, of course, he can keep up how he has performed so far.
=7: George Russell: 7. 65[Last race: 7]Having wrapped up the F1 2024 qualifying battle in good time, Russell had nudged ahead of team-mate Hamilton in our power rankings, but has since been pegged back. =7 (+1): Lewis Hamilton: 7.
65[Last race: 8. 5]Recorded his worst score of the season in Austin, but bounced back in Mexico City after an excellent duel with his team-mate. 9: Nico Hulkenberg: 7.
28[Last race: 8. 5]Another strong weekend for Hulkenberg, with a double points weekend for Haas putting them in the hunt for P6 in the Constructors’ standings. 10 (-4): Liam Lawson: 7[Last race: 6]Like Colapinto, Lawson’s score is flattered as a result of his comparatively small data base, leading to what is likely to be bigger swings in his placing for the rest of the year.
After an impressive debut in Austin after replacing Daniel Ricciardo, it’s up to him to maintain this performance level for the rest of F1 2024. 11: Pierre Gasly: 6. 76[Last race: 7]Gasly took a well-earned point in Mexico City, with Alpine looking to get as much as they can out of a difficult year.
12 (-2): Fernando Alonso: 6. 75[Last race: 6]Alonso looks to be getting all he can from his Aston Martin at present, though the edge of the points appears to be the car’s ceiling. 13: Yuki Tsunoda: 6.
58[Last race: 6]Tsunoda’s crash at the start in Mexico City came through no fault of his own, but that it came just after his mechanics worked so hard to repair his car after qualifying will have been difficult for them to stomach. 15: Esteban Ocon: 6. 4[Last race: 6]A tough run of form for Alpine has left Ocon unable to show the best of himself or the car of late, his season-best score of 8 coming all the way back in Canada. 16: Lance Stroll: 5.
95[Last race: 7]Lance Stroll has matched up better against Fernando Alonso on the whole this season, but still sits on under half his two-time World Champion team-mate’s points total at this stage. 17: Kevin Magnussen: 5. 94[Last race: 9]Magnussen’s ratings have had the widest variation from race-to-race of any driver on the grid so far this season, such as an 8/10 performance at Imola either side of a 2/10 at Monaco and Miami.
A season-best score of 9/10 in Mexico, though, puts him back closer to those above him in these rankings. 18: Zhou Guanyu: 5. 53[Last race: 5]Perhaps reflective of Sauber’s form that both their drivers have fallen towards the bottom of the power rankings table at this stage of the season.
19: Valtteri Bottas: 5. 5[Last race: 5]Probably as much his team’s issue as his that he features as low, but the fact remains Bottas has not scored a point for a long while now – and he’ll be looking to do so as soon as he can. 20 (-3): Sergio Perez: 5.
43[Last race: 2]A second score of 2/10 in a row has seen Sergio Perez drop to the bottom of the power rankings for the season so far. Read next: F1 2024: Where to buy, how to watch, cheapest ticket prices and best package deals
