FIA Steward insists Red Bull could sack Sergio Perez before end of 2024

Sergio Perez, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson are in fierce competition for Red Bull’s second seat in 2025. Recently, Red Bull’s sister team VCARB sacked Daniel Ricciardo due to poor performances and replaced him with Lawson for the rest of the season. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko stated that either Lawson or Tsunoda will be in contention for a spot on the main Red Bull team.

This puts Perez’s future with the Austrian team in doubt. Ex-F1 driver Johnny Herbert stated that Red Bull might drop Checo before the season ends to avoid losing second place in the Constructors’ to Ferrari. At the US GP, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both fought for crucial points, while Red Bull relied solely on Max Verstappen to deliver.

Herbert argued that Red Bull needs to replace Sergio Perez with another driver or risk finishing third. However, he questioned whether the Austrian team dared to make such a bold decision before Perez’s home race in Mexico. Sergio is delivering but not quite delivering enough, so do they replace him now?

I think yes, if they’re trying to keep that second place in the constructors. Whether they have the cojones to do it before Sergio Perez’s home race in Mexico is the question. Johnny Herbert said (via Genting Casino)Red Bull feared only McLaren until the Azerbaijan GP, as they closed the gap and threatened their lead in the Constructors’ Championship.

However, Ferrari’s recent surge in pace has made them a serious contender as well. While Perez scored points last weekend, his performance wasn’t on par with Ferrari’s drivers. Red Bull now faces a critical decision before the Mexican GP if it wants to secure its third consecutive constructors’ title.

Sergio Perez got points this weekend, but he’s only getting little bits, nothing compared to what is happening with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who are neck and neck as far as pace goes and got a massive haul of points when one-two. Tsunoda has shown impressive performances, especially compared to his former teammate Daniel Ricciardo, and has even scored valuable points.

Johnny HerbertHelmut Marko has been keeping an eye on the 24-year-old for the seat alongside Verstappen. However, Red Bull has now created a competition between the Japanese and Liam Lawson over the final six races to determine who will claim the seat. For me, it’s Yuki Tsunoda who should come in.

I think Yuki has done a brilliant job this year. He’s very consistent as well. His qualifying has been very, very strong.

Always been very good at qualifying. Johnny Herbert saidRELATEDSergio Perez’s father claims the Mexican will get the ‘weapons and tools’ to fight for F1 titleThis weekend, the 2024 Formula 1 season reaches its 20th race in Mexico. Max Verstappen regained some form at the US GP but finished third.

Finishing ahead of Lando Norris is crucial for defending his championship standings.
