Sergio Perez has continued to showcase a decline in performance in the 2024 season amidst Red Bull’s struggles. The Mexican’s failing performances have caused the team to lose the constructors’ championship lead to McLaren. Perez’s future was under question amidst such results.
Helmut Marko revealed that the 34-year-old’s contract extension would be ‘useless’ due to such performances. Christian Horner had claimed that Sergio Perez‘s future was in his own hands despite landing a multi-year contract extension. Moreover, Perez’s future at Red Bull was evaluated over the summer break as he was allowed to finish the 2024 season.
Regardless, amidst the Mexican’s dismal performance, he may be ousted by the coming season. Helmut Marko reckoned that despite Perez’s contract, the sport ran on meritocracy. This meant that if the performances were not right, contracts were useless.
Hence, Perez could be ousted from the team if he doesn’t improve his performance in the five remaining races. Marko declared that Red Bull will decide at the end of the season about which driver is the best team-mate for Max Verstappen. Perez may have a contract, but Formula 1 is a meritocracy, If the performance is not right, even contracts are useless.
