Pitcher who never cracked Red Sox roster gets surprising MLB deal with Mets

Righthanded pitcher Justin Hagenman, who spent a season and a half with the Worcester Red Sox without getting a call-up from the parent club in Boston, signed a one-year free agent deal with the New York Mets Monday. Hagenman, 28, was part of the return from the Los Angeles Dodgers when the Red Sox sent Kiké Hernandez back to L. A.

The Red Sox have nothing to show for the Hernandez deal now, having packaged righthander Nick Robertson, the other piece they acquired from the Dodgers, in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielder Tyler O’Neill. The Cardinals also obtained Victor Santos in the trade.

O’Neill is a free agent after leading the Red Sox in homers with 31 this past season. O’Neill could still return to the Red Sox, but the team declined the opportunity to present him with a qualifying offer earlier this month.
