Shock favorite emerges in race to sign Juan Soto

By ERIC BLUM Published: 16:53 EST, 20 November 2024 | Updated: 16:53 EST, 20 November 2024 Juan Soto could be staying in New York, but not with the Yankees, as the Mets have emerged as the shock favorite to sign Juan Soto this offseason. An inter-borough move could be in the works as the Mets have been mentioned before as joining the race to sign Soto, but not from the pole position. Previous belief into the situation painted the Yankees retaining Soto as the most likely scenario.

Soto changing teams but not housing now appears more likely. The Mets moving up on Soto’s list, which was reported by baseball insider Jon Heyman, did not include the Yankees right behind. Heyman placed the Blue Jays in between the two Empire State teams in the chase for Soto.

The 26-year-old is looking to cash in on his future this offseason, with a long-term contract that could rival Shohei Ohtani’s $700million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers, Phillies, and Red Sox were listed as the next plausible suitors for Soto. Soto has kept his cards close to his chest since the Yankees’ Game 5 loss in the World Series to the Dodgers, handing Los Angeles a championship.

His last comments on the situation were about enjoying his time with the Yankees and needing time to make his decision. Although there is no timetable for Soto to make his decision, a new contract for one of baseball’s best is expected to be in place by the end of the year. It would be a massive blow for the Yankees, who are hoping to keep their core together for another run at the World Series.
