In a heartwarming development, Ndara, a once-orphaned elephant, joyfully celebrated the birth of her firstborn son, lovingly named Neptune by the dedicated caretakers at the Voi Reintegration Unit. The wonderful news unfolded on March 4, 2017, when keepers witnessed a special gathering near the unit.

Wild-born babies Eve, Emma, Safi, Eden, and Thor, accompanied by their mothers and a few female ex-orphans from Emily’s herd, were in attendance for this joyous occasion. It was revealed with delight that Ndara had successfully given birth to a baby boy.
During the gathering, Emily’s second-born calf, Emma, showed a keen interest in Neptune. A heartwarming bond was formed between the two as the tiny trunk of the newborn made contact with Emma. This significant milestone in Ndara’s journey as a mother brought immense happiness to everyone at the reintegration unit.

Mweya assumed the role of an unofficial caretaker for Neptune, bringing the count of wild-born babies among our Ex Orphans to an impressive 25, a true testament to the success of the Orphans Project. Ndara’s journey has been incredibly inspiring, having been rescued from poaching and surviving three poisoned arrows with months of intensive care. Her resilience, coupled with the support from the Orphans Project, gave her a new lease on life.

Despite facing numerous challenges, Ndara was able to rejoin Emily’s herd. The day she embraced motherhood held a special significance given her tumultuous past. Neptune’s arrival is deeply meaningful for those who have witnessed Ndara’s journey and supported her in her times of need.
Ndara, now a proud and nurturing mother, is supported by devoted nannies her lifelong companions, and fellow orphans who wholeheartedly assist her in caring for Neptune, a precious bundle of joy depending on her for every need.

This day not only commemorates the birth of a baby elephant but also stands as a triumph for orphaned elephants and their unwavering efforts to provide them with a second chance at life. The sight of Ndara embracing motherhood and caring for Neptune is a heartwarming testament to the resilience and love that exist within the elephant community.
