On the eve of World Elephant Day, a compelling rescue mission unfolded in Taita County, Kenya, near the Teita Sisal Estate.

The distress call reported a mother elephant and her calf trapped in a cesspool on a community ranch, a situation exacerbated by recent heavy rains that left wildlife in the area struggling for survival. Drawn by the scent of water, the elephants found themselves in a perilous predicament.
The pit, though initially sealed, proved incapable of bearing the weight of the trapped animals. In response to the urgent call, a dedicated team, including the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit and ground personnel, swiftly arrived at the scene. Phillip Kyriazi of Teita Sisal Estate provided invaluable support with a JCB backhoe, essential for digging a trench and backfilling the pit with sandbags.

Working tirelessly through the night, the team faced challenging conditions. They initially used the backhoe to break down one side of the pit, then transitioned to a manual approach to avoid harm to the mother elephant.
Hand-dropping sandbags, they assisted her in gaining enough height to lift her legs out of the pit. Throughout the ordeal, the calf remained calm by her mother’s side.

As the sun set, the team continued dismantling the walls of the cesspool. The mother elephant, trapped with her calf, heard the cries for help from her anxious baby. Although she managed to rest her front legs on the pit’s edge, she lacked the strength to pull herself up.
In a brilliant move, the team utilized a strap attached to a backhoe claw to lift the exhausted mother to safety.

Remarkably, the mother displayed no aggression, recognizing that the team was there to help. The calf, unaffected by the ordeal, joyfully reunited with her mother, providing a heartening scene for onlookers.
This rescue saga underscored the vulnerability of elephants to human actions and emphasized the critical role of positive intervention. The elephants demonstrated their resilience through love, loyalty, courage, and understanding.

As night fell on World Elephant Day, the courageous mother and her resilient baby vanished into the night, symbolizing a fitting and joyous conclusion and foreshadowing a future brimming with vitality.
